I did some spot illustrations for a publication called Mechademia. I just finished the last one which was a full page pattern/illustration. I wanted to keep it flat while still creating depth since it's supposed to function as a background and not as an illustration so much. I am going to try and get the hang of digital painting. Something I keep struggling with so I'm going to try and do a painting every day to practice up. Been trying to focus more on drawing backgrounds and structures. I never seemed to be interested in that stuff until recently. Maybe I need a break from just drawing people. Plus it's much needed practice as well. Not really trying to make everything look perfect either. I would go insane if I tried to do that. I hate using rulers and such.

Haven't done any inking at all lately and my mind is still being blocked in a way and I can't think of anything to draw for myself so I copied this image from Inoue Takehiko, the artist that draws Vagabond. I was in Duluth all weekend and sadly only had time to draw this on image. I didn't have much time so there is a lot of negative space in there. A friend of mine turned me on to this free application for his iPod Touch/iPhone called Random Pose. When I can't think of anything else to draw, I grab my phone. open up random pose and draw what's there. Today was the Gay Pride Parade and my wife and I went to support our friends. To be honest, I hate parades so I took my sketchbook with to draw people who were watching the parade. It was actually kind of cold today which is unusual. The past couple weeks have been muggy and hot, but I think the rain we had on Saturday cooled everything down. When I draw this way, I always think about what my teachers would be saying to me if they saw this. I know my drawing teachers would be upset for lack of structure and composition, but my illustration teachers might like it due to the imperfections and the way the mistakes in the line work can give character to the people I am drawing. Sometimes I totally screw up and get the proportions way off,

I am a big fan of Tom Waits work and the chance came for me to be able to use him as a subject for an assignment. I enjoy how innovative and unique his music is and I tried to capture some of that mystery in my drawing of him. I think I want to go back into it and put some more color in the background. That was one of the criticisms I've had so far and I think it is a good suggestion.

I went to the Science Museum of Minnesota for a project and I had to highlight certain information I felt important and put it on a limited space. I didn't realize how hard it was going to be trying to get everything I wanted on there. A bunch of stuff still didn't make it, but I hope there is enough cool stuff there for people to see and say, "hey, that looks cool, I want to see that!"

Here are a couple more book illustrations I did. I was looking at the New York Times and finding some interesting headlines to go from. It was very free to just do whatever comes to mind rather than do tons of sketches, then get approval and then go and do final and then revisions. I know this doesn't happen in the "real" world, but it's a fun exercise.

I started painting in this old antique book from the early 1900's. It's a nice way to work out ideas because the book already has text and the pages are yellow from age so it's not as precious as a pretty white sheet of paper. Also, you can use the content on the page to sometimes generate ideas or even become part of the art. I am enjoying it and I will keep posting pages as I get the done.

This is a movie I poster I did for a local movie theater. They were showing a trilogy of Eastwood movies. I am quite happy with how everything turned out. I spent a lot of time getting the design just right. Design is something I am not strong in so this was a good project to do.

I am in an illustration class where we are more focused on the jpb market. Apparently illustrators send out post cards as a way to marketh themselves so here is an illustration I did to send off to various design companies that will in turn, throw my illustration away. For my digital class we had to design a book cover. My girlfriend gave me a great idea of doing Yakuza tattoo book, but my teacher said it had to be a real book. I did this image cause I hate TV. I seriously haven't seen anything on TV worth watching, but then again, I don't watch TV to see if anything is actually on. I get my news from the radio beceause it seems to be more reliable that TV news. ANyway, I think it just numbs your brain and kills your soul :).

Assignment for INK client. This is an actual client that is trying to launch a new company selling pens. Everyone of the other students was trying to show the pen doing stuff, but I tried to make it look more like something fashionable...since that is what the pen is about. These pens cost up to 250k so it's for business peoples too. I like my concept, but maybe need time to pull it together more

This is another attempt at doing digital painting. This one was done in photoshop instead of painter. I didn't know PS had such cool effects. I still like corel painter's blending more.There is still a lot of work to do I think. I need to re-paint some of the hand so it's more real and maybe change the bottle color. Oh yeah and make the shoes look more like an adult's rather than a child.

Some quick paintings I did for Humane Society project. I believe it was for the web too. Anyway, I had 3 hours to do 3 images which included research which I didn't have much time for. I like the one with the dude walking the dog and also the kid with the cat baloon. I like the fish one, but in concept. I didn't have time to push the watercolors much. I maybe had 20 minutes for that one.

This is a painting I did in 15 minutes for my class. The assignment is to observe something for 15 minutes once a week for 3 weeks. This is my third observation. The first one was done in pen, the second in colored pencil and this one in painter.
